Tom-N-Jerrys Boat Center – How to Become a Trained and Experienced Marine Technician

Tom-N-Jerrys Boat Center has been in the marine business for several years and has experienced staff who have had several hours training through Honda Marine, Yamaha Marine, and others. Marine technicians form an integral part of a boat dealership and are responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and installing outboard engines. Marine mechanics or technicians work at boat dealerships, repair shops, and boat rental companies. Here are a couple of things you need to know if you are planning on becoming a marine technician.

Formal Education

To become a marine mechanic, you will need to have a GED certificate or a high school diploma. You will need to have extensive knowledge in marine engine process, fuel, electrical and mechanical systems that relate to boats, yachts, and watercrafts. You will also need excellent communication and customer service skills as you will be dealing with people.

If you are looking to become a marine technician or mechanic, you will need to have an associate’s degree in marine engine repair. Most study programs are for two years and deal with various operational, maintenance and troubleshooting processes. Some of the areas of study could include:

  • Electrical engine systems
  • Small engine mechanics
  • Mechanical systems
  • Inboard and outboard engines
  • Marine fuel systems
  • Marine mechanics and repairs
  • Small engine heating and cooling


Marine technicians or mechanics are not required to be licensed. However, some employers require certification which you can receive from the American Boat and Yacht Counsel (ABYC). You will have to pass at least three certification courses to be receive the Certified Master Technician (CMT) certification.
